Bull Search Tool Instructions

1. Start with the full list of bulls

When you first open the tool, the full bull list will be your starting point.

Before changing filters, take a quick look around. You will see:

  • A list of bulls

  • Filters and selection boxes

  • A semen seller selector on the left

  • Text filters for searching pedigrees

  • A button that opens an individual bull page once a bull is selected

The tool works best when you start broad, then narrow the list down.

2. Use filters to narrow the list

Filters help you search for the kind of bull you want.

Examples:

  • Sire
Example: Typing “Connealy” in the sire filter will return bulls sired by a bull with “Connealy” in the name.

  • Seller or source
Example: Selecting the GENEX tile will show active GENEX catalog bulls.

  • Birth Weight
Enter a minimum and maximum actual birth weight to find bulls born within that range.

When you choose a filter, the bull list updates automatically.

3. Do not use too many filters at once

Start with one or two filters, then add more as needed.

For example:

  1. Start with Calving Ease if looking for a heifer bull.

  2. Then add Birth Weight.

  3. Then add growth traits like Weaning Weight or Yearling Weight.

  4. Then add carcass or dollar value traits if needed.

Each filter makes the list smaller. If you use too many strict filters at once, you may filter out nearly every bull.

Simple rule: Start wide, then tighten the filters one at a time.

4. Search for a specific bull

To find a specific bull, use the search box named Bull Search Name.

  1. Click inside the search box.

  2. Type part of the bull’s name or registration number.

  3. Wait for the list to update.

You usually do not need to type the full name. The most unique part of the name is often enough.

5. Use EPD filters

EPDs help compare bulls for different traits.

Remember: The best number depends on the trait and your breeding goal.

Review the American Angus Association’s EPD explanations here...

A good way to use EPD filters:

  1. Decide your main goal.

  2. Pick the most important EPD for that goal.

  3. Set that filter first.

  4. Use other EPDs to fine-tune the list.

Examples:

For a heifer-safe bull, start with Calving Ease and Birth Weight.

For a terminal growth bull, start with Weaning Weight, Yearling Weight, and performance traits.

6. Compare bulls

After narrowing the list, compare the remaining bulls side by side.

Look at things like:

  • Actual birth weight

  • Frame score

  • Phenotype

  • Maternal pedigree

  • Seller/source

  • Other traits important to your herd

7. Click on a bull

Click a bull in the filtered list to select it.

After selecting a bull, a green Bull Detail button will appear. Click it to open that bull’s individual page and review all available data.

Other clickable items may include:

  • Registration number: Opens the AAA “Find an Animal” page

  • Bull picture: May open the seller’s page

Use the Back button in the top right to return to your filtered list.

To unselect a bull, click the selected bull again or click a blank area of the report.

8. Clear filters and start over

If the list gets too small, empty, or confusing, use Clear All Filters.

When in doubt, clear the filters and start fresh.
